Rural Digital Equity Summit

By: Erma Ratliff, Community Engagement and Events Coordinator

The National Digital Inclusion Alliance defines digital equity as “a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy, and economy. Digital equity is necessary for civic and cultural participation, employment, lifelong learning, and access to essential services.”

The Beyond the Bridge Rural Digital Equity Summit is the first event of its kind focused specifically on our rural communities across south-central Kansas and northern Oklahoma. This event is the brainchild of Kanokla’s Community Engagement and Events Coordinator, Erma Ratliff, and Rachel Couch from Workforce Centers of South Central Kansas, and is set to tackle the challenges our areas face. After attending a larger conference surrounding digital equity, Erma and Rachel felt that the topics discussed didn’t include enough of a rural perspective. At this upcoming event, all local broadband providers, community organizations, and local residents all have a seat at the table with a common goal to improve connectivity and ensure everyone in our communities have the resources they need for a brighter future.

Why This Summit Matters

The Beyond the Bridge Summit is about bringing people together to tackle the digital divide and promote equity in rural areas. It’s an opportunity for community members, leaders, and stakeholders to collaborate and devise practical solutions that can drive real change.

Understanding Equity in Rural Communities:
Have you ever wondered what equity really means for our rural towns and farms? This session will break it down and show why it’s so important for us to address these issues. It’s a chance to learn and understand how equity can impact our daily lives and the future of our communities.

Discussion on Infrastructure Development:

Infrastructure might sound like a technical term, but it’s crucial for connecting our rural areas and helping them thrive. Experts will dive into what we currently have, what we need, and how we can improve to ensure everyone benefits from progress.

Innovative Futures for Rural Communities:
We all want to see our communities grow and prosper. This discussion will focus on creative and practical strategies that can help make that happen. From new technologies to fresh ideas, you’ll hear about ways to make a positive impact right here at home.
