Meet Jill Turek
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your family?
I’m originally from Wichita, where I was born and raised. After graduating from Wichita State University, I met and married a local farmer before rural life became trendy. For the past three decades, I’ve been happily married to a fourth-generation farmer from Sumner County. Together we’ve raised three daughters, and recently celebrated the addition of our second son-in-law and a grandson!
Could you share some insights into your professional background? What experiences or skills do you bring to
Kanokla board that you believe will be most valuable?
My experience and innate skills in strategic planning and optimistic problem-solving are qualities I am eager to bring to the Kanokla board. I firmly believe in the power of brainstorming and critical thinking to navigate challenges and uncover alternative solutions, never accepting “no” or “can’t” as final answers.
My educational background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications with emphasis in Marketing from Wichita State University. My career began as a Marketing Manager for a franchisee of YUM Brands, encompassing Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, where I developed my skills in brand management and strategic marketing. Subsequently, I served as the VP of Marketing and Human Resources at Impact Bank for 21 years, a period during which I balanced full-time professional responsibilities with raising a family and contributing to the family farming operation.
Following my tenure at the bank, I transitioned to Sumner-Cowley Electric Cooperative as the Member Relations and Communications Manager. In this role, I was dedicated to community outreach and supporting youth through various programs, promoting cooperative principles, and fostering community engagement. This experience underscored for me the crucial role cooperatives play in rural areas and the importance of collaboration for mutual success.
Currently, as an HR Consultant for ProValue Insurance, I provide human resource guidance and strategies to grain cooperatives in rural communities across Kansas and Colorado. This role enables me to leverage my extensive experience in human capital management and community support to enhance the operations and effectiveness of these cooperatives.
Additionally, my five years of entrepreneurial experience running a jewelry, gift, and clothing boutique in Caldwell have equipped me with insights into small business management and customer engagement.
What do you love most about living in rural Kansas?
What I love most is the strong sense of community. Everyone looks out for one another, offering support through both good times and bad. Many residents have lived here for generations, weaving a rich tapestry of shared experiences and memories. It’s common to find neighbors surprising each other with fresh-baked cinnamon rolls or organizing a community meal train for a neighbor in need.
South Haven is a small town where residents appreciate a quiet, relaxed lifestyle and the close connections they have with family and friends. The local school district, service station, and bakery are the heart of our community, serving as gathering places where we come together to enjoy each other’s company.
What makes you passionate about rural life and the importance of broadband in these areas?
Having been raised in a metropolitan area, my perspective on rural life transformed dramatically after marrying a farmer and spending the past 30 years embracing all things rural. This journey has given me a deep appreciation for the unique values, strong community bonds, and resilient spirit that characterize rural living.
The importance of broadband in rural areas cannot be overstated. In today’s digital age, access to high-speed internet is crucial for the growth and sustainability of rural communities. It enables farmers to utilize advanced technologies for precision agriculture, helping to increase productivity and sustainability. It allows local businesses to reach wider markets and compete effectively in the global economy. Moreover, broadband access is essential for educational opportunities, healthcare services through telemedicine, and keeping families connected, especially in remote areas.
My passion for rural life and the critical role of broadband stems from witnessing firsthand how connectivity can transform lives. High-speed internet is a vital tool for bridging the gap between rural and urban areas, ensuring that rural communities can thrive and remain vibrant. I am committed to advocating for and working towards enhancing broadband infrastructure in these areas, knowing it is key to unlocking the full potential of rural life and securing a prosperous future for the generations to come.
