Suzy’s Bakery Opened in Caldwell, Kansas: A Sweet Journey Fueled by Community Support

Caldwell, Kansas, recently celebrated the grand opening of Suzy’s Bakery, owned by 23-year-old Suzann Wylie, whose love for baking began at age 12. After years of selling her treats online through “Suzy’s Sweet Treats,” she took the leap to a storefront in 2023, eventually purchasing her own building in June 2024 and transforming it into a charming bakery with the help of Kanokla’s Revolving Loan Fund.
Suzy’s passion for baking was nurtured from an early age in 4-H, with support from her family. Her grandmother, an avid baker, and her mother, the family cook, both inspired her and helped her refine her craft over the years.
Transforming the space was no easy task—Suzy and her team took on extensive repairs, from replacing seven layers of flooring to clearing out years of neglect, ultimately creating the welcoming bakery it is today.. A significant boost in bringing Suzy’s Bakery to life came from the Kanokla Revolving Loan Fund (RLF), established in 2008. This program offers 0% interest loans for up to ten years to support local businesses and community projects by providing affordable funding. The Kanokla RLF operates in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), creating a revolving loan pool where repaid loans can fund future projects, fostering a cycle of local investment and growth.
With the Kanokla RLF, Suzy acquired vital equipment and materials. She recalled the application process as very detailed but appreciated the guidance in understanding USDA requirements and documenting her plans. With a grace period until December, she has time to stabilize her business, and the manageable 10-year payback offers relief from prior rent expenses.
The Kanokla RLF currently supports eight local small businesses, enabling them to pursue their goals and make meaningful investments without the burden of high-interest financing. The fund prioritizes projects that create jobs, enhance community infrastructure, and support local sustainability efforts. Eligible projects can range from expanding a storefront to renovating public facilities or funding green initiatives.
Suzy’s building carries a rich past, having been a clothing store and even a bait and donut shop. During renovations, she discovered an old windowpane etched with “oysters and ice cream,” a whimsical nod to its storied history.
One of Suzy’s Bakery’s most vibrant features is the “sprinkle wall”—a burst of color inspired by her mom’s suggestion. Using colorful popsicle sticks, Suzy hand-painted each “sprinkle,” transforming the wall into a playful focal point that’s already popular with customers.
The bakery’s grand opening coincided with Caldwell’s “Stroll the Streets” event in October, providing the perfect occasion to introduce her treats to the community. Before even opening, Suzy had sold 75 pans of cinnamon rolls. “It was chaotic, but that’s the fun of it!” she laughed, recalling the excitement of opening day.
Suzy’s Bakery, backed by her family, community support, and sheer dedication, is now a delightful new addition to Caldwell. Her story shows what’s possible with vision, perseverance, and a little local support. Inspired by Suzy’s journey?
